Poetry Slam finalists perform their pieces
Youth Speaks Hawai’i (YSH) is a non-profit organization supported by Hawai’i Arts Alliance which educates students between ages 13 and 19 in the writing and performance of slam poetry. Since its founding in January 2005, YSH has established a presence in several Oahu schools. Presently, YSH offers weekly writing workshops, monthly poetry slams, and special events throughout the year.
On Friday, March 25th, Youth Speaks Hawai’i presented its biggest event of the year: Grand Slam Finals. The top qualifying poets from the previous season, plus a few open “storm” poets, competed to determine the top six poets of the year. Winners received a roundtrip ticket, plus room and transportation, to the Brave New Voices youth poetry festival in San Francisco and the opportunity to represent Hawai’i in international competition.
